Scythes and Benches

2 min read Fritz Trapp (er/ihm)

Today a few of us were back at the Kinder, Wald und Wiese e. V. grounds, working on the seating area in summery temperatures. Ben wasn't there, so I walked around the site and looked into all kinds of huts and caravans to gather the things we needed. Someone brought a sander and an electric grass trimmer – one of those devices where cords spin really fast at the front. I also had spray paint from Ben with me. We found scythes and a larger scythe that we first had to assemble. That was already tricky, and the actual scything wasn't any easier. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the lawn mower running – that was probably down to my own lack of knowledge.

The benches were sanded down, and so was the table. Then everything was swept off and sprayed with the paint – a bold pink sold as garden paint. Ideally you'd spray the benches more than once, but the three cans just about stretched to the three benches.

And with that, we were done for the week. It was sweaty work, mostly because of the heat. But we left behind a lovely little spot with benches – under a big tree in the shade, which gives me the feeling of an Astrid Lindgren story. Kalle Blomkvist or something like that.

Next week we'll move on to the ground. There's wood there that needs to be chipped – we can then spread it across the floor.

At uni, I lay under a cherry tree in the shade and looked up at the canopy of leaves. Silas asked what I like to do in summer. Pretty much everything in the shade and in peace.
