On the lawn near KiWaWi and the project management team

3 min read Fritz Trapp (er/ihm)

There are already some other great blog posts about last week. The project leaders met with Esther before the seminar to discuss the small steps of progress we’ve made. We talked about how to divide up tasks within our group and brainstormed ideas for the seminar. We’ll be doing a site visit with Katharina from BUND and watching a film by Martin Gruber. We also plan to create a wildflower meadow. Esther brought along plenty of seeds for that.

Creating the wildflower meadow was my seminar assignment. To do this, we removed the sod and scattered Katharina’s seed mix there. I learned that you need fewer seeds to scatter than I thought. It’s also good to mix in sand or something similar to make scattering easier. Katharina also said that the meadow is already very lively. You just have to mow it less often. Learned something new again. At the end, we had a discussion about the seminar texts.

This week, part of the group was already on the grounds of Kinder, Wald und Wiese e. V. with Ben. There, Ben first explained what might happen. The most exciting part for me was that there are plans to plant fruit trees there. The city is providing them as a compensatory area for a construction site somewhere else. Fruit trees are, of course, beautiful and practical for the children and nature. But that's what's so great about this: since the trees are designated as a conservation area, they can't be touched for the next 20 years. This means the future of Horner Spitze is secure for now.

Other projects include a bookshelf, seating areas, and an old plastic pond where you can chill drinks. The idea is to have everything in one place, making the area more appealing to visitors taking a break. From what I can tell, the area is used a lot by groups of children who have activities there. That’s great, of course, but we could also attract a wider audience. The more people there are, the harder it is to tear down the Horner Spitze.

The group split up, with some clearing vegetation and building benches. You can see that on Instagram ;) Others have been thinking about how to set up the bookshelf. Where should it go? What should it look like? There’s the option of using an old, small construction trailer, and in front of it stands the frame of a party tent. We can spruce that up with a tarp and invite people to hang out there. More on that will follow after some careful planning.

Linus and I dug a hole and sank the plastic pond into it. It was quiet work, surrounded by stinging nettles that pricked us now and then. To fill the pond, we fetched water in jugs from a well in the community garden and struck up a conversation with someone who has a plot there. Apparently, it was immediately clear that we were from KiWaWi, and she asked about the horses. She also remarked that it’s good that the site still exists. The club is well established there. The work we’re doing today is both satisfying and fulfilling. The benches and the pond are already showing tangible progress.

On the first EtherPad, there’s also a link to a Signal group. This group is intended for communication and coordination with KiWaWi.
